As a nurse hands Christina Borysowki her newborn daughter, joy fi lls the new mother's heart. With wonder, she lovingly admires the baby she has named Hope. Her body tingles with excitement and fear. Hours later, Hope's eyes finally open to reveal spectacular turquoise irises. At that moment, she has no idea that months later, the sparkle and life will abandon those beautiful eyes, the gaze will turn inward, and Hope will lose all interest in the world.
Years later, things cannot get any worse for Christina Borysowski and her profoundly autistic daughter. With Hope destined for a future that promises nothing but bleakness, isolation, and likely institutionalization, Christina is already well aware she is paddling alone against the strong tides of prejudice, misunderstanding, and fear. To compound matters, there is much more at stake than just Hope's well-being. Christina is barely hanging on. In a desperate quest to find peace for both Hope and herself, Christina is left with an agonizing choice that will deter-mine the future for both of them.
In this eye-opening and poignant story about autism and its tragic human cost, one woman takes an unimaginable journey through hopelessness to discover an intense love that drives her to make the unthinkable a reality.

As a resident of Youngstown, Ohio, I saw Victoria Ferrante on a local TV station's evening news broadcast discussing her book. Being a special education teacher, I decided that it would make a great read for my approaching spring break and downloaded it immediately. Am I ever glad I did! I must admit, that much like the first public school teacher that mom, Christina, encounters in this novel, my knowledge about autism is limited. I am primarily a teacher of children with learning disabilities and only occasionally get a very high-functioning autistic child on my roster. I loved the fact that I could learn so much about autism from this book but in a fictional format! The struggles and decisions that Christina faced on a daily basis were heartwrenching as was the effect that all of this had on other family members. Though frustrated and furious at Christina's husband, Pete, throughout the novel, I wasn't at all surprised by his decision. While Hope is the center of this book, I was also fascinated by her brother, Daniel, who is largely overlooked by his overwhelmed mother. The ending is an unexpected and bold choice by the author to say the least! Ultimately, I believe that this novel will help me to be more empathetic of the difficult choices that the parents of my students face on a daily basis. So, I thank you, Ms. Ferrante, for widening the scope of my understanding about autism while telling a compelling story that I'm sure will linger on my mind and in my heart.Product details

Hope Victoria Ferrante 9781462062379 Books Reviews
I just finished reading and reviewing this book for my blog. I believe if you like drama novels that hits close to home you will enjoy this novel. Reading it left me sad and hopeful for the parents who have to deal with having a child with autism. I felt like I could feel the authors pain throughout the entire novel. It's definitely worth picking up and giving it a read.

First of all, I am not much of a book reader. I am not one to pick up a book and read it. There has been two books in my entire life that I picked up and could not put down. The first was "The Last Lecture" about Dr. Pausch and the second was this book. I started reading it on a business trip on a Monday afternoon while I was flying and finished it on the following Sunday morning. I stayed up late reading. I did not watch TV but instead read "Hope". I read it before work instead of going to work early. It was really amazing! Victora Ferrante is such a great writer and story teller. The way she described the episodes in extraordinary detail was impressive.
Beautifully written and inspiring. It did open my eyes and heart. I will not ever judge or walk by, I will lend a hand. God Bless!!!!
I stayed up much too late to read this book. Very compelling writing...I am waiting for her next book to come out.
